: Ludwig and Margaret of Hesse

Ludwig and Margaret of Hesse

Prince Ludwig, Prince of Hesse (1908-1968) with his fiancee, the Hon. Margaret Geddes at Wolfsgarten in the summer of 1937. Prince Ludwig, son of Prince Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt, was Cultural Attache at the German Embassy in London in the late 1930s. He met Margaret Geddes at the Winter Olympics at Garmisch in 1936. In 1937 they visited Darmstadt together where the Grand Duke's health was failing. He died peacefully on 9 October meaning that Ludwig and Margaret's wedding had to be postponed from 23 October to 20 November. Then, on 16 November, his brother George Donatus, his wife Cecilie of Greece and their sons were killed in a plane crash off Ostende on their way to the wedding
