Margaret and Johanna of Hesse

Margaret (nee Geddes), Princess Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt (1913-1997), with her adopted daughter Johanna in 1939. Margaret began her life in Darmstadt in the worst possible circumstances. Her husband's entire family, save for one baby, was killed in a plane crash on the way to her wedding and her life in the country began with a funeral. She and her husband adopted the remaining child, Johanna but sadly, the little girl died of meningitis in June 1939
