Prince Charles Edward, 2nd Duke of Albany, Duke of Saxe-Coburg (1884-1954) in German military uniform during World War I. When the Duke of Saxe-Coburg's son Alfred died in 1899, Charles Edward became the heir much against his wishes. He ended up leading his own army during the First World War, exemplifying how the war divided European royalty
