Prince Maximilian of Hesse-Cassel
Mourning card for Prince Max of Hesse-Cassel (1894-1914), son of Princess Margarete of Prussia, sold in aid of Hessian troops in Alsace-Lorraine during World War I. Max, the second of Margarete's six sons, entered the war as a nineteen year old subaltern in the Prussian 1st Hussars. In October 1914, his column of cavalry was resting at the monastery on the Mont des Cats, near Bailleul in Belgium. The British 3rd Cavalry Brigade found them and Max was wounded in the fighting: he died in the abbot's care on 13 October
