Princes of Battenberg

The three sons of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg pictured in military uniform during World War I. From left; Prince Maurice of Battenberg (1890 - 1914); Prince Alexander of Battenberg seated, later Marquess of Carisbrooke (1886 - 1960) and Prince Leopold of Battenberg (1889 - 1922), later Lord Leopold Mountbatten. Alexander was wounded in the leg at the battle of Aisne. His brother Leopold may have been in France but his haemophilia made anything but a staff appointment out of the question. Maurice was a lively and spirited young man who the others looked up to, even though he was the youngest. He joined the King's Royal Rifle Corps and as lieutenant fought at Mons in August 1914, surviving the long retreat that followed. He fought on the Aisne, and, on 27 October, he was leading an attack on a German position in the Ypres salient when a shell burst near him. He died on the way to the dressing station
