Queen Victoria with Prince Albert Victor and Prince George of Wales and Princess Victoria of Hesse-Darmstadt (standing) and Princess Ella of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1871. The Queen took close interest in her grandchildren, particularly the Hesse children who she took under her wing following the death of their mother, Princess Alice in 1878
