Queen Victoria with Princess Ena
Queen Victoria with her youngest granddaughter, Princess Ena of Battenberg (1887-1969), only daughter of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg. The Battenbergs lived at home with the Queen, and the children were close to their grandmother. Ena married King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1906. The Queen and Ena are dressed in mourning for Prince Henry of Battenberg, Ena's father. He had joined an expeditionary force to Ahsanti in Western Africa in 1895. There was no fighting but he contracted malaria and died on board HMS Blonde off the African coast on January 20th 1896
