Plate inscribed with parodic verses, WW1

Plate inscribed Here with a loaf of bread, beneath the bow. A muttered curse, but ne'er a whine, and thou - beside me, singing in the wilderness. The wilderness is paradise, enow. (a parody of lines from Omar Khayyam). Cartoon by Bruce Bairnsfather, 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment (1888-1959). Bairnsfather Ware. (Back of plate, Grimwade's Staffordshire England, made by the girls of Staffordshire during the winter of 1917 when the boys were in the trenches fighting for liberty and civilization.)
