A general view of the Elswick Shot Tower, demolished 1968-69, used for creating lead shots, with a yard with palettes in the foreground. Shot towers were used to create spherical shots of lead. This was done by dropping molten lead through a seicve, down a large shaft or tower into water. The metal cools as it falls and turns spherical due to surface tension. This shot tower was part of Elswick lead works, and the tower was demolished 1968-69
