A general view showing Tarn End Hotel with Talkin Fell in the distance, seen from the north-west. The Talkin Tarn lake was formed by glacial activity, and dates to over 10, 000 years old. It is around 65 acres and has been used since the mid 19th century as a water sports and leisure site. The Tarn End Hotel was originally a farmhouse, most likely early 19th century. The house was converted into a domestic residence in 1889, when the main range was re-fronted and the northern ranges of farm buildings were converted and attached to the main house. It is believed that the house became a Temperance Hotel in 1910, and remained a hotel throughout the 20th century, until it's closure in 2001. The north-facing gabled end of the building has TARN END HOTEL on the external stack
