An interior view of St Peter's Chapel at Auckland Castle, formerly a domestic hall, later chapel, showing the 17th century oak screen. The chapel was originally a domestic hall in the castle, and was altered by Bishop Bek in the early 14th century, and converted into a chapel between 1661 and 1665 by Bishop Cosin. Bishop Cosin had the pulpit, reading desk and chancel stalls made in a style that mixes Gothic and baroque, including the oak screen which was made in 1663 by John Brasse and Abraham Smith. The screen has thick bands of leaf and foliage carvings over the lights, which are separated by slim shafts. Above is a frieze with a pierced crest design.
