The sculpture was unveiled in 1934. It depicts tennis players, golfers, cricketers, swimmers, oarsmen and footballers in bas-relief. The phrase Play Up Play Up and Play the Game from Henry Newbolt's 1892 poem Vitai Lampada is engraved between the figures. The sculpture is Grade II listed
