A view of the front elevation of the Town Hall, Lancaster

A view of the front elevation of the Town Hall, seen from the north on the eastern corner of Dalton Square gardens, with the gardens and Queen Victoria Memorial in the foreground. A view of the front elevation of the Town Hall, built between 1906-09 and facing north, showing the portico over the entrance with figurative sculpture in the pediment, supported by six ionic columns. The scuplture scene is of a seated King Edward VII with sceptre and orb, but it is not very clear in the image. The north front is two storeys above a basement, and has a balustrade parapet across the roof. Above the portico is a clock tower supported by tuscan columns, topped with a ribbed dome roof with finial. In the foreground its the Queen Victoria Memorial, erected in 1906 and by Herbert Hampton. The statue has a Portland stone base with bronze relief of prominent figure in Victorian society, and representations of Wisdom, Truth, Liberty and Justice. Seated lions are positioned at each corner, and standing on the top of the plinth, the stood figure of Queen Victoria. The statue is seen fom behind, and shows the inscription on the back of the plinth which reads: GIVEN TO HIS NATIVE TOWN BY LORD ASHTON A.D. 1906
