1864 Grand Banner of the Radical Democracy. John Fremont and John Cochrane were the candidates of the Radical Democrats, a faction consisting mostly of Germans and abolitionists. The third party of disaffected Radical Republicans felt that President Abraham Lincoln was too moderate on slavery and racial equality. When the campaign failed to attract support, they withdrew from the election in September, to avoid drawing votes away from Lincoln and enabling the election of McClellan
