1st Div. U.S. Marines were greeted by crowds of Chinese in Tientsin, in Sept. 1945. When Japan surrendered in 1945, the 50, 000 Marines of the now unnecessary invasion force were sent to China. Their mission was to accept surrender from Japanese and repatriate them. Also to help the Nationalists (as opposed to Communists) reassert their control over areas vacated by the Japanese.
