Aerial view of Hughes Flying-boat seaplane under
Aerial view of Hughes Flying-boat seaplane under construction at its dock in Long Beach, 1947. The prototype was named Hughes H-4 Hercules, but better known as the Spruce Goose because of its wood (birch) construction. Developed as a troop transport, it was six times larger than any aircraft of its time. On Nov. 2, 1947 it made its only test flight, because the war that caused its creation was over.
