African American contrabands at the Quartermasters

African American contrabands at the Quartermasters Wharf, Alexandria, Virginia, 1863-65. They were Freedmen who worked as paid laborers for the Union Army on the busy wharves at Alexandria, Virginia. These Freedmen moved commodities and war material in transit, into storage, onto wagons, or railroad cars, to be taken to the front during the Civil War
