African American men digging a trench in front of the stockade on a Union fortress in Alexandria, Virginia. During the Civil War, both capitals, Richmond and Washington, were heavily defended with garrisoned fortifications, 1861-65. These workers were employed and paid by the Quartermaster Department of the Army, and worked for between $7 and $12 dollars a month ($200 and $350 in 2018 dollars). Photo by Andrew Russell
