American expedition, under Commodore Perry

American expedition, under Commodore Perry, landing in Japan, July 14, 1853. The ceremonial assembly of Americans was led by three sailors, two of whom were African Americans, who carried the Commodores pennant. Two sailor boys followed with scarlet boxes, containing President Millard Fillmores letter and Perrys Credentials. Then came Perry, and his officers, in a procession flanked by squadrons Marines in formation at right, with a Navy band, and sailors on the left. A quickly assembled temporary building awaited the meeting where the Japanese received the letter
