American Revolution. Battle of Kings Mountain, South Carolina, Oct. 7, 1780. The battle was fought between Patriot and Loyalist militia. British Major Patrick Ferguson, commander of the Loyalist militia, was shot and dragged to the enemy lines by his horse. Still conscious, he shot and killed a soldier who approached him, expecting his surrender. Enraged, the Patriot militiamen, killed him and treated his corpse with disrespect
