American Revolution. The British navy bombard the fort on Sullivans Island near Charleston, June 28, 1776. Commanded by Colonel William Moultrie, the fort guarded the entrance to Charleston Harbor. Scene shows Sergeant William Jasper restoring the Forts flag after it was shot away. The sandy soil and the forts palmetto log construction absorbed much of the shells energy and the defenders artillery from the Fort damaged Admiral Richard Howes fleet, which withdrew to New York City
