American Revolution. Capture of John Andrew Andre, Sept. 23, 1780. Andre mistook his Patriot captors as Tories because one wore a Hessian soldiers overcoat. After behaving suspiciously, Andre offered them a bribe, if they would let him go, which they refused. Andres captors were John Paulding, David Williams, and Isaac Van Wart. The United States Congress gave each of them a pension of $200 a year, and they were honored with a medal, the Fidelity Medallion
