Charleston, South Carolina, commissioned this portrait of Washington to commemorate the president's visit in May 1791. It depicts Washington on the eve of the Battle of Princeton, New Jersey, January 3, 1777. Charleston refused the painting, preferring a more peaceful image, which Trumbull completed for them
