American Revolution, New York Campaign. Battle of Fort Lee. 5, 000 British troops landed in New Jersey, Nov. 20, 1776, in pursuit of the Continental Army. The invasion force commanded by General Charles Cornwallis crossed the Hudson River, landing below Fort Lee. The orders from Gen. William Howe, were to clear the rebel troops from New Jersey without a major engagement, and to do it quickly before the weather changed. The Americans retreated toward Hackensack, abandoning 50 cannon, 1, 000 barrels of flour, and stores of ammunition
