American Revolution, Saratoga Campaign, Battle of Bennington, August 16, 1777. Brig. Gen. John Stark of the New Hampshire Militia defeated a British force of 2, 000. New England militia, defeated the 800 British foragers made up of Hessians, local loyalists and Indians, plus 200 reinforcements. The British lost 1000 fighters and gained no provisions, weakening it before the Battle of Saratoga. In spite of the battles name, it took place in Walloomsac, New York, because the British were blocked from their target, Bennington, Vermont
