American Revolution, William Howe, Commander in Chief of his Majestys Forces in America, March 1775 through May 1777. He led British troops in the Battle of Bunker Hill, evacuated his army from Boston on March 1776. He defeated Washingtons defense of New York City in Oct. 1776, and occupied Philadelphia from Sept. 1776. Howe resigned in Oct. 1777, after his failure to support Burgoynes upstate campaign contributed to the British defeat at Saratoga
