American Sioux Indians and United States Army

American Sioux Indians and United States Army Commissioners attend a peace council at Fort Laramie, 1868. Indians sit on the ground at left, and Commissioners sit above on benches or boxes. Generals William S. Harney and William T. Sherman are next to the right long tent stake. The photograph was taken by Alexander Gardner, ca. January-April 1868, during the treaty negotiations. The Sioux tribes involved were: Oglala, Miniconjou, Brule bands of Lakota people; Yankton Dakota; and Arapaho. A key provision established the Great Sioux Reservation which included perpetual Sioux ownership of the Black Hills. When gold was discovered there in 1875, the US broke the treaty, resulting in the Great Sioux War of 1876-77
