Amir Amanullah, the King of Afghanistan (center), and his cabinet dressed in European styled business suits, ca. 1928. On January 14, 1929, Amanullah abdicated and fled to neighboring British India, after which Habibullah Kalakani, a Tajik bandit and war lord, reigned for ten months until Mohammed Nadir Shah deposed and executed him. Amanullah died in exile in Switzerland in 1960
