Andersonville Prison, Georgia, was photographed by A. J. Riddle, on August 17, 1864. The photos were commissioned by the prison commanders, Gen. John Winder and Capt. Henry Wirz. They were copyrighted and distributed in the North, causing speculation their purpose was to move the Lincoln Administration to resume prisoner exchanges, which ended when Confederates reenslaved African American POWs
