Andersonville Prison. The Good Samaritan, Father Whelan prays for the dead and dying. Irish born Peter Whelan was assigned by the Catholic Church to minister in the prison from June through October 1864. He did so every day, from morning to sundown. Before he left his prison assignment, he acquired ten thousand pounds of wheat flour for the prison hospital
