Andrew Jackson, 7th President of the United States, held office from 1829 to 1837. Jackson, the heroic victor of the Battle of New Orleans, wears a military commander's dress uniform. This 1817 oil on canvas, was one of Ralph E. W. Earl's earliest portraits of Jackson. In 1819, Earl married Jackson's niece, Jane Caffery. After she died in childbirth, Jackson and Earl remained close friends until the painter's death in 1838 (BSIC_2020_12_21)
