An Anglo-Dutch fleet bombarded Algiers on August 27, 1816. European ships and munitions were deadly enough to devastate the Algerian fleet, harbor, and defenses. The 9 hours attack brought Omar Agha, the Dey of Algiers and Ottoman Governor, into negotiations resulting in a Treaty on Sept. 24, 1816. With it, Omar Agha freed about 1, 200 Christian slaves, the hostage British Consul, and repaid £80, 000 ransom money taken in 1816
