On April 11, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln

On April 11, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln made his last public speech to an audience outside the White House. He read from a prepared text on Reconstruction policy, in which he supported Congressional acceptance of the new state constitution of Louisiana. Addressing the concerns of the Radical Republicans, he professed his support for limited African American suffrage. John Wilkes Booth was in the audience, and vowed, That is the last speech he will make. He shot Lincoln three days later at Fords Theater
