THE ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISHMEN IN VIRGINIA
THE ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISHMEN IN VIRGINIA, 1590 engraving published by Theodor De Bry, from a drawing by John White. Two ships sail toward the coast of Virginia, near five shipwrecks. Beyond the barrier islands is the Island of Roanoke (Roanoac), the site of the first English settlement in North America. It was first settled in 1585 and again in 1587. After both colonies failed, Roanoke was known as the Lost Colony, because the fate of its approximately 120 settlers is unknown
