Asa Philip Randolph, director of the 1963 March on Washington, before the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. The massive assembly of 250, 000 people was the culmination of his half century of social and labor leadership. He organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. In 1941 Randolph threatened to hold a mass protest to pressure President Franklin Roosevelt to ban racial discrimination in the defense industries during World War II. He did the same to President Truman to end segregation in the armed services in 1948. (BSIC_2020_7_18)
