Bar-room Scene, 1835, by William Sidney Mount. A partying group of well dressed men make sport of the drunken dance of a man wearing tattered clothes in a Long Island Tavern. Standing along the wall is an African American figure, who, as a free black man in 1830s New York, was able to frequent the public tavern. While he is smiling at the scene, he is not included nor participating. Mount often painted uncaricatured African American, with suggestions of the complex inter-racial social circumstances of antebellum society
