Battle of Great Bethel during the US Civil War, June 10, 1861. Federal troops under Col. Ebenezer Peirce, fought Confederates under Col. J.B. Magruder. In the foreground, some of the 3, 500 Union troops advance up the hill. Their attacks failed against 1, 500 better led Confederate troops. Battle of Great Bethel and Battle of Philippi are both mentioned as the first land battle of the US Civil War
