Battle of St. Clairs Defeat, (aka Battle of a Thousand Slain) on Nov. 3, 1792. US soldiers surrounded on the hilltop encampment, could not see their forest sheltered attackers through the gun smoke. Of the 1, 000 on the hill, about 350 participated in the bayonet charge escape, and of these only about 70 were unwounded. The total lost from the army was 656, plus uncounted women and children camp followers. The casualty rate was the highest percentage ever suffered by a US Army unit
