Benjamin Franklin, was US Ambassador to France from Dec. 1776 to 1785, during the American Revolution. This 1778 portrait was painted by French artist Joseph Siffred Duplessis, for which Franklin posed in his simple broadcloth suit, without the formal powdered wig worn by most men at the French Court
