Benjamin West, expatriate artist in portrait of around 1776 when he was 38. He left the American colonies to study art in Europe and became an established painter in London, never to return to the US. He influenced American art through his students, who included, Matthew Pratt, Charles Willson Peale, Gilbert Stuart, Ralph Earl, John Trumbull, Washington Allston and Gilbert Stuart
