Bison-Dance of the Mandan Indians in front of their Medicine Lodge. The Bison Dance, or Buffalo Dance, took place during annual festivals of North American Plains Indians, including the Mandan, Sioux, Cheyenne, Pawnee, and Omaha. The festivals celebrated the return of the buffalo herds, with men wearing buffalo, body paint, and loin cloths. In the background is the Medicine Lodge in the Mandan town of Mih-Tutta-Hankush. Hand-colored aquatint etching of 1840 by Swiss-French artist Karl Bodmer, who accompanied German explorer Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied on his Missouri River expedition, 1833-1834
