Boston in ruins after the great fire of November 9th and 10th, 1872. The fire burnt uncontrolled through 65 acres of mostly commercial buildings. At lower left, approximately 70-100 suited men gather on Sumner Street. Like Chicago, wood was Bostons primary building material, and the fire codes were weakly enforced. The Boston fire caused 13 deaths, compared to approximately 300 in Chicago
