The burning SS VOLTURNO, a passenger ship sailing from Rotterdam to New York City. The photo was taken from one of the 11 ships responding to her SOS of Oct. 9, 1913. 521 passengers and crew members were rescued. 136 women and children, the first to leave the ship in lifeboats, were smashed or swamped in the rough seas (BSLOC_2017_17_108)
