Captain James Lawrence, by Gilbert Stuart. He served in the US Navy during the Quasi War with France and the War of 1812. When his ship, the frigate USS Chesapeake, was under attack, the mortally wounded Lawrences dying words were Don't Give Up the Ship! In spite of this inspiration line, USS Chesapeake was taken as a prize by the HMS Shannon, and towed to Halifax by British Captain Philip Broke
