Catharine Lawrence, with the former slave
Catharine Lawrence, with the former slave child she adopted, Fannie Lawrence, 1863. The five year old octoroon, was the daughter of an enslaved mother, Mary Fletcher, and her white owner, Charles Ayres. In 1862, Mary Fletcher, Fannie, and several other slaves, escaped to Union territory. When Fannies mother returned to her other enslaved children, Fannie was adopted by Lawrence, and became a poster child of the anti-slavery cause. Photo by Renowden, Brooklyn, NY
