Cecil Calvert, 2nd Lord Baltimore, in portrait engraving by Abraham Blootelingh, ca. 1640-1659. Calvert was a favorite of the English King Charles I, who granted him the leadership of the Province of Maryland, a proprietary colony of 12 million acres, named Maryland after his Queen, Henrietta Maria of France. Both Charles I and Calvert wished to establish a colony in which Roman Catholics could worship and live in peace with Protestants
