Charles-Cotesworth Pinckney was a veteran of the American Revolution from South Carolina, and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. As Minister to France in 1796-97, he was subjected to French political manipulation in the XYZ Affair. Upon his return to the US in 1797, he served as a general in the Quasi-War with France
