Charles Willson Peale, self-portrait of 1791, when he was 50 years old, and lived to paint another three decades. He studied with John Singleton Copley and Benjamin West, both of whom spent the years of the Revolution in London, leaving the American field open for Peale to become the portraitist of the American Revolution
