He was assassinated in 1839, with his son John, and nephew Elias Boudinot, for signing the Treaty of New Echotain of 1935, which ceded the US government what remained of Cherokee tribal land east of the Mississippi River in exchange for land in Indian Territory, and the payment of annuities
