Chief Joseph, a leader of the Nez Perce War which was a defended retreat from Euro-American encroachment, violence, and land acquisition. The US army pursued the 700 men, women, and children led by Joseph and other Nez Perce chiefs, as the moved toward Canada. The Nez Perce were captured at the border where Joseph pledged, from where the sun now stands I will fight no more. They were forced back to their reservation, to cope with hardship and defeat
